Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, kita sering mengucap kata informasi. Kitapun mengakui sering kali merasa membutuhkan informasi. Disadari atau tidak, kita sebenarnya sedang hidup di era informasi. Aktivitas kita juga selalu berkutat dengan informasi. Mulai dari bangun tidur hingga tidur lagi sesungguhnya kita selalu melakukan aktivitas informasi. Kenyataan ini yang menjadi sumber inspirasi kami untuk menulis buku “Konsep Dasar Sains Informasi”. Harapannya agar kita bersama-sama dapat mempelajari inti dari informasi dan tentu saja, bagaimana ilmunya.
Jika dilihat dari kata pembentuk frase, secara sederhana informasi sains dapat dimaknai sebagai ilmu informasi. Jika kita enggan berpikir sejenak, keberadaan informasi sesungguhnya yang ada di sekitar kita. Informasi ada dimana-mana. Apa yang kita lihat di seluruh alam semesta ini, apa yang dapat kita sentuh, bahkan apa yang bisa kita rasakan adalah informasi. Untuk hal ini, lebih jauh di buku ini diulas tentang pemaknaan informasi dari sisi filsafat.
Lalu apa manfaat dari mempelajari ilmunya, ilmu apa saja yang berhubungan dengan informasi, dan bagaimana cara meneliti ilmunya?. Pada buku ini tercantum pula teori dan konsep untuk menganalisis informasi, seperti information-as-knowledge, information-as-process, dan information-as-thing dari Buckland (1991), Types of Information milik Bates (2006, 2015, 2018, 2022), serta disiplin informasi dari Bates (2007).
Buku ini bermanfaat bagi siapa saja yang ingin mengetahui beragam informasi, bagaimana cara mempelajarinya, serta apa perkembangannya. Pada buku ini juga dijelaskan bagaimana perilaku masyarakat dalam aktivitas informasi, termasuk etika pemanfaatan informasi dan sanksi yang akan kita terima jika melanggar. Kompleksitas kajiannya mencakup jenis institusi pengelola informasi, nama-nama profesi informasi, serta apa saja kewajiban mereka.
Tidak lupa juga dicontohkan tema penelitian, informasi kuatitatif, istilah ilmu pengukuran informasi, dan apa saja aplikasi dan software yang berguna informasi sebagai tools.
