Modal sosial, sebagaimana dijelaskan oleh Nan Lin, merupakan sumber daya yang tertanam dalam jaringan sosial dan dapat dimobilisasi untuk mencapai tujuan tertentu. Dalam konteks globalisasi dan ekonomi budaya, konsep ini menjadi relevan dalam memahami bagaimana tradisi yang pada awalnya bersifat kolektif dan diwariskan lintas generasi bertransformasi menjadi komoditas yang memiliki nilai ekonomi. Proses komodifikasi ini sering kali menghadirkan dilema antara pelestarian nilai-nilai budaya dan eksploitasi tradisi demi kepentingan ekonomi. Buku ini menguraikan berbagai perspektif dalam melihat fenomena komodifikasi tradisi melalui lensa modal sosial. Dengan mengacu pada pemikiran Nan Lin, pembahasan dalam buku ini tidak hanya menyoroti bagaimana jejaring sosial dan relasi kekuasaan berperan dalam mempertahankan dan mentransformasikan tradisi, tetapi juga bagaimana kapital sosial berkontribusi terhadap nilai ekonomi, politik, dan budaya dari sebuah tradisi yang dikomodifikasi. Penulisan buku ini berangkat dari berbagai studi kasus yang menyoroti fenomena komodifikasi tradisi di berbagai daerah, baik di tingkat lokal maupun global. Dengan pendekatan akademik yang berbasis pada kajian teori dan penelitian empiris, diharapkan buku ini dapat menjadi rujukan bagi akademisi, peneliti, mahasiswa, serta praktisi budaya yang tertarik pada kajian modal sosial dan komodifikasi tradisi.
